Ladies,

Do you have any insight into how to write an abstract? Is it just a paper about a topic in line with the conference topic?

Thanks!

I enjoyed your story about the Cabbage Patch doll. If you ask Rebecca she will tell you about hers. She and her sister each received a Cabbage Patch doll from me (their mom) and I sewed dresses for them for Christmas one year in the 80's, (one red and one green with matching dresses for their Cabbage Patch dolls.) I haven't thought about that for years, but your story reminded me. Thank you. It is a very pleasant memory. I miss my daughters a lot. They both moved to Seattle, and I live in St. Louis.

Kudos to Michael Croland for this very thoughtful and eloquent discussion, which very clearly presents Jewish teachings on compassion to animals.

As president of Jewish Vegetarians of North America, I want to stress that the current mistreatment of animals results in major environmental threats including global warming and an epidemic of diseases in the Jewish and other communities, and that the production and consumption of meat and other animal products violate basic jewish mandates to preserve our health, treat animals with compassion, protect the environment, conserve natural resources, help hungry people and seek and pursue peace.

Yes, in some ways the first two Animal Advocacy unconferences we did here in Vancouver kinda felt like what you described, Louche. But it was necessary in order identify the issues and topics that were important to the community before projects could appear. I think the continuation of the dialogue beyond just the initial unconference is really important. It's like a relationship, you can't skip the intros and random small talk before you become BFF. As a community building tool, I think the unconference works well. It empowers people who don't normally see themselves as "leaders" to participate and even lead projects. By our third meeting (which just happened), some really interesting projects and project teams had begun to form.

@Jeannie & @Louche - a poorly framed and poorly run meeting will almost always end up being a bad experience. Open Space isn't magic, it's just a format - and in order to work it needs to be a part of a process that involves framing the event, careful planning and crafting a good invitation. The actual event is just one piece of the entire dialogue process, which begins well before the people come together - and ideally should continue after as well.

It's also quite possible for two people at the same event to have entirely different ideas about the success or failure of that event. We all bring our own expectations to an event, and that definitely colours our perspective on the outcome.

Louche--I think it just has to be put together correctly. I went to one of the open space conferences a couple of weeks ago and it was a fantastic experience. It's just got to be organized by someone who knows what they're doing, because you're right--it can go wrong. (Bias admitted: I am with Liberation BC.)

The one open spaces "unconference" I've been to was terrible. People were so poorly prepared, it was just like, "Hey, let's chat about random topic none of us knows much about." Or "let's spend our entire hour just introducing ourselves, and by the way, here's my business card." It was also a social justice "unconference," which is an extremely, extremely broad topic, which didn't help. I have found, of course, that I'll make a better connection if I attempt to meet up with other vegans for a chat than if I try to meet up with random people interested in "social justice."

My dharma teacher led a powa service (traditional buddhist practice after a death) for my cat after his death a year ago. I felt very grateful to have had a formal recognition from my spiritual community. It's wonderful what this chaplain is doing.

I loved listening to this podcast. Very informative to the end. I am a big fan of Melanie Joy's book and her idea of Carnism and how we can be better at communicating with Carnists in a more productive way by understanding how to articulate our choices of Veganism.

Grandma...simply AWESOME..again! Loved how she said that it isn't easy to convert, but she's willing to dedicate to changing! Love her! Smooches, Gram! Congrats on the journey to Vegetarianism! You are a leader and will convert the masses...I see it happening! Be strong. We need you around another 86 years!

Thanks for taking the time, girls...for this wonderful show! Enjoyable. Educational. So important and appreciated.

I was JUST talking to someone about this the other day. Why eat cow and be weirded out eating dogs or bunnies -- or cockroaches, for that matter? In other cultures, it's the norm (and they might think it's weird to have a pet dog). I think we all just need to have more respect for the creatures around us, whether we eat them or not (that's a start) :)

p.s. I already love your site design.
